Choosing an internet service is easier when you know what to ask. Satellite internet in particular varies a lot between providers, plans and locations, so the right questions matter more than any headline number.
Start with your exact location
Availability is tied to where the dish will actually sit. Ask whether availability has been checked for your specific address rather than just your ZIP code, and what would change that answer, such as a tree line or a hill to the south.
Ask for the full cost
- What is the monthly price, and is it a promotional price that changes later?
- What do the equipment and installation cost, and do you buy or rent the equipment?
- Which taxes and fees are added on top?
- What happens to the price if you move or change plans?
Understand data and speed policies
Some plans include a set amount of high-priority data and slow down after you use it. Others work differently. Ask what happens when you reach a limit, and whether speeds you see quoted are typical, maximum or minimum.
Check the contract
- How long is the commitment, if any?
- What does it cost to cancel early?
- Is there a trial or return window for the equipment?
- Who do you contact for support once you are a customer?
Be honest about how you use the internet
A household that mostly browses and streams has different needs from one with several remote workers on video calls. Tell whoever you speak with what you actually do online, and ask how the service handles it.
